There has been an uproar after the English Department of Delhi University increased the fees for PhD. Regarding this, teachers and students are continuously giving their feedback on social media also. DU has increased the fees for PhD from Rs 1,932 to Rs 23,968. This fee is annual.
After this decision of Delhi University, the teachers have said that the annual fee for PhD in other departments is a maximum of Rs 1,000. But why has the fee for doing PhD in English been increased so much? Many student organizations have also opposed the increase in fees.
Fees increased on many items
Reports suggest that this decision has been taken only after the permission of the university. There was no increase in fees for years. At the same time, the university has decided that if the annual income of a student’s family is less than Rs 8 lakh, half the fees will be charged. On the other hand, university teachers say that fees on many items have increased. Many colleges have increased fees by up to 10 percent.
Strong opposition from SFI
Students Federation of India has condemned the increase in fees. It has been said that students’ access to quality higher education will be affected. On the other hand, SFI has said that we strongly oppose the fee increase in DU.
How much are the fees in Jamia and JNU?
Talking about the fees of other PhD courses run by Delhi University, the annual fee of PhD in many subjects is around two thousand rupees. Whereas, if we talk about Jamia Millia Islamia, the annual fee here is Rs 45,300. Whereas if we talk about Jawaharlal Nehru University, the annual fee here is Rs 1,391.
