1. Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Madras has been placed at number one in this list. IIT Madras was created in 1959. It is counted among the highest educational institutions not only in India but in the world. It has about 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1200 administrative and support staff. It is spread over an area of about 250 hectares.
2. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
Delhi has got the second place in this list. It was constructed in 1961. Since then till now IIT Delhi. It has been included in the best institutes of the country. After its establishment the Institute was declared as an Institute of National Importance under the ‘Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963’ and its name was changed to ‘Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi’. Apart from engineering, students graduate in many disciplines including physical sciences, management and humanities and social sciences.
3. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
IIT Bombay ranks third. It was established in 1958. Many such personalities have emerged from here, who have brought laurels to the country in the whole world. IIT Bombay is the first IIT to be established with foreign aid. It got financial help from UNESCO in the form of Rubles, the currency of the then Soviet Union. In the year 1961, the Parliament declared the IIT as a ‘National Institute of Importance’.
4. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Kanpur has been placed at number four in this list. It was established in 1959. It was established as a collaboration between the US and India. It has emerged as a premier Indian technical institute primarily focused on research and graduate education in science and engineering.
5. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Kharagpur has been placed at number 5 in the top 10 engineering colleges. It is the oldest IIT institute, which was constructed in 1951 by the Government of India. The Government of India has officially recognized it as a National Institute of Importance. It was established after independence to train scientists and engineers of the highest order in the country. It has the largest area among all the IITs in India. Along with this, the number of departments and students here is also the highest.
6. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
IIT Roorkee is at number 6 in this list. Its name was earlier College of Civil Engineering at Roorkee (1847 – 1853). After this it was named Thomson College of Civil Engineering (1853 – 1948), University of Roorkee (1948 – 2001) and in 2001 it was renamed as Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. This institute is counted among the top engineering institutes of the world.
7. Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati
IIT Guwahati ranks 7th in the list of engineering colleges. It was established in 1994. It is the only IIT institute in the Northeast. The educational program here started in 1995. Presently all major engineering and science subjects have been included inside this institute. The campus of this institute is spread over an area of 285 acres.

8. Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad
IIT Hyderabad is at 8th position in this list. It was established in 2008. It is one of the second generation of IITs. Its foundation is based on research and innovation. Today the institute offers programs in all branches of engineering, science, art and design.
9. Indian Institute of Technology, Tiruchipalli
IIT Tiruchipalli, one of the top engineering colleges, was established in 1964. It is an institute of national importance and one of the 21 IITs proposed under the non-profit public-private partnership (PPP) model of MHRD.
10. Indian Institute of Technology, Indore
IIT Indore was established in 2001. Initially its classes were held in Devi Ahilya University’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, but since 2016 it is being held in its own campus which is located in Simraul. It is one of the 8 new IITs set up by the Central Government.
