Himanshu’s childhood was full of struggle
Born in Sitarganj in Udham Singh district of Uttarakhand, Himanshu Gupta’s childhood was spent in Sirauli, a small town in Bareilly district. Describing his initial struggle in an interview, Himanshu said that his childhood was very different from ordinary children as the financial condition of his family was not good. He spent his childhood in extreme poverty.
Himanshu’s father initially worked as a daily wage laborer, due to which the family could hardly survive. Later he started setting up a tea stall and Himanshu also used to help his father in this work after school. Later the whole family moved to Sirauli in Bareilly district, where his father opened his own general store. Himanshu says till today my father runs the same shop.
Had to travel 70 km to go to school
Even after shifting to Bareilly, Himanshu’s troubles did not ease, as there was no school nearby. Himanshu says, “The nearest English medium school was 35 km away and they had to travel 70 km every day to reach there. Himanshu was already smart in studies, after 12th Himanshu got admission in Hindu College in Delhi.
Now the biggest problem was money. That’s why he taught tuition along with studies, wrote paid blogs and got many scholarships. After graduation, Himanshu enrolled for a master’s degree in environmental science from DU and topped the college. After this Himanshu had a chance to go abroad and do PhD, but he decided to stay in the country.
UPSC preparation by staying at home
After completion of education, Himanshu returned to his home and started preparing for civil services by staying there. After that he worked hard and appeared and passed the UPSC exam for the first time in the year 2018, but he got selected for the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). After this Himanshu continued his preparation with the job and took the exam again in 2019.
Himanshu got selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) in his second attempt. After which he was selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in his third attempt. During this time Himanshu never took the help of coaching nor did he move to any big city. He prepared at home and cracked this exam 3 times in a row.
Know Himanshu’s exam preparation strategy
To prepare for this exam, most of the candidates go to the big city and take the help of coaching. At the same time Himanshu decided to do self study. Explaining his strategy, Himanshu said in an interview that for this exam he first read NCERT books and then prepared from standard books.
Also, whenever he needed, he used the internet and took out notes. Internet helped him a lot in exam preparation. Himanshu said that he never stopped reading the newspaper, as it gave him complete information about current affairs. They believe that everyone must read newspaper or magazine daily during preparation.

Himanshu’s advice to candidates for exam preparation
Himanshu helps the candidates preparing for this exam to go ahead with a better strategy. He says that those who want to prepare by living in a small village or town, they should take the help of internet and work hard to fulfill their dream. Himanshu says to read newspaper every day, refer NCERT books, go to internet to see notes and make your time table accordingly. According to Himanshu, you can crack the UPSC exam by taking care of these small things.
