Cracking the UPSC exam, one of the toughest exams in the world, is not an easy task. To clear this exam, candidates have to work hard for years, although even after that the hope of success is very less. There are many candidates who clear the prelims and mains exam but get entangled in the interview every time.

Preparing for the interview of this exam is not a matter of a few days, as your personality is tested in the interview. In this, many times such questions are asked, which are outside the bookish knowledge and our thinking, so before going to this interview it is very important to have complete knowledge about the format of questions asked in it. In such a situation, know here some important tips to clear the interview and the format of the common questions asked.

It is important to identify yourself before appearing in the interview.

In this interview, simple questions related to personal resume, such as the meaning of your name, your hobbies, the clothes you wear and the questions related to your studies are generally asked. Therefore, it is very important for you to have complete information and preparation about them. So that you can answer these questions without stopping.

Be patient during the interview

If you are going for this interview then you must have patience. Also, develop listening skills within yourself. In this interview it is necessary that the candidate understands the question properly by taking necessary breaks between the sentences. Answer it only after understanding it properly. Instead of exaggerating on any subject, one should talk about the issue. Apart from this, it is very important to use words like etiquette, permission, sorry and thank you in the interview. Suppose you do not know the answer to any question, in such a situation, you can clarify the matter by saying sorry.

Be aware as well as observation

Current affairs plays a major role in this interview. In such a situation, prepare them in advance and give accurate answers to whatever is asked. Allow the interviewer to complete your question first and then give your answer clearly without twisting. Use smartness without arguing and be honest in your answer. You should know in advance that whoever you are giving this interview to become, your interviewer has become that 20 to 30 years ago. So don’t try to fool them.

Format of Common Questions asked in UPSC Interview

Interview Questions on Introduction

– Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Tell us about your hometown?

– What is the meaning of your name?

– Tell us about your family ?

Note- You should not take more than 30-40 seconds to answer the questions related to introduction.

Education based questions

– What subjects did you study and do you think they are relevant for administrative life?

– What was your favorite subject?

Why did you choose ‘this’ college/school for studies?

What kind of projects did you do from school to college?

– Do you consider yourself an average student? If yes why?

Note- In this you will be asked questions related to graduation subject or the same, keep complete preparation about the subjects you would have mentioned in your form.

Question on current affairs-

– What are today’s headlines?

What is the main event that happened in India / your state / your hometown in the last few months and what was the important issue?

Tell us something about the politics and democracy of the country?

Note- For the preparation of these questions it is necessary to read the newspaper daily and memorize the daily news. Unless you know the right answer to the question, it is better to avoid giving your opinion about it.

Question on work profile-

If you were working, what were your roles and responsibilities?

Why do you want to become an IAS/IPS/IFS officer?

Note- If there is a gap in the year of your job, then be prepared to answer it well in advance, as well as prepare well about your job experience.

Question on Optional Subject-

– Why did you choose this ‘subject’ as optional?

– Why didn’t you choose your graduation subject as optional?

Note- Here you may have to face many questions based on your optional subject.

Question related to hobby-

Here, the nature of questions varies depending on the hobby listed in your DAF. If you have told a game as your hobby, then questions will be asked on the players and statistics related to it. On the other hand, if you have told music, then there will be questions related to it. You may also be asked to listen to music during this time.

Keep these things in mind during the interview

Keep following current affairs continuously.

– Prepare a list of possible questions that can be asked based on your DAF.

Practice answering questions in front of a mirror.

– If possible, record yourself while answering questions during practice.

– Increase your knowledge on the subject of your education.

Don’t worry too much about theoretical questions.

– Absolutely do not argue with the members of the panel. This is a discussion, so candidates must maintain decorum at all times.
